Soy vs Paraffin Candles: An Honest Comparison
Neither wax is strictly better — they trade off differently. Soy wax melts around 120°F and burns cooler and slower, generally with strong cold throw. Paraffin ranges roughly 130-150°F and burns hotter, generally with stronger hot throw while lit. If you want maximum scent while burning, paraffin-forward blends usually win; if you want a slower, cooler burn and strong scent from an unlit jar, soy usually wins.
The one thing to know: A wax's melt point is the single biggest driver of how it burns. Soy wax melts around 120°F, paraffin around 130–150°F depending on blend, coconut wax around 124°F, and beeswax the highest of the common waxes at roughly 145–147°F. A lower melt point generally means a candle pools faster and can feel softer at room temperature, while a higher melt point holds pillar shapes better in warm rooms but can need a hotter flame to establish a full melt pool.
Melt point is the root cause of every other difference
Nearly every practical difference people notice between soy and paraffin candles traces back to melt point. A lower melt point (soy, ~120°F) means the wax turns liquid at a lower temperature, which tends to produce a cooler, slower burn and can make the surface more prone to cosmetic imperfections like frosting (a natural crystalline bloom) or wet spots — neither is a defect. A higher melt point range (paraffin, ~130-150°F) burns hotter, which vaporizes fragrance oil more readily during burning — the main reason paraffin-forward candles are often described as having stronger hot throw.
Scent throw: not the same story both ways
Cold throw is how strongly a candle smells unlit, straight from the jar or freshly opened — driven by how much fragrance oil has migrated to the wax surface. Hot throw is how strongly it smells while burning, driven by the fragrance oil vaporizing out of the heated melt pool. A candle can have strong cold throw and weak hot throw (or vice versa) because they depend on different physical processes — one is surface evaporation at room temperature, the other is vaporization from a heated liquid pool.
Applied to soy vs paraffin: soy tends to hold fragrance oil well at room temperature (strong cold throw) but its cooler burn can vaporize less of it while lit; paraffin's hotter burn tends to push more fragrance oil into the air while burning (stronger hot throw), even if its cold throw isn't always as strong straight out of the jar. Buy based on which one matters more to you.
Burn time and cost
A higher price does not reliably mean a longer burn time — total burn-time hours scale mostly with the amount of wax in the container (a bigger jar burns longer almost regardless of price tier), while price differences more often reflect fragrance complexity, wax type (soy/coconut blends and beeswax generally cost more per pound than paraffin), and brand/packaging. Compare rated hours-per-dollar directly rather than assuming price equals longevity.
