A candle can be formulated to smell great sitting on a shelf (great for retail sales) without necessarily being tuned for maximum throw once lit, and vice versa — which is why "smells amazing in the store" is not a reliable predictor of how it will perform burning on your shelf.

What actually improves hot throw

Fragrance load is the percentage of a candle's total wax weight that is fragrance oil, and it's the main lever behind how strong a candle smells. Most commercial candles run roughly 6–10% fragrance load; below that, hot throw tends to be faint, and pushing much higher risks the wax not fully binding the oil, which can cause sweating (oil beading on the surface) or an unstable, sooty flame.

Beyond fragrance load, a properly sized wick matters — too small and the melt pool never gets hot enough to vaporize much fragrance; too large and it burns unevenly and unsafely. Burning each session long enough to sustain a full melt pool (see the burn-pool rule) also matters, since a shallow, brief melt pool vaporizes less fragrance than a sustained one.
