Wax melt points
Melt point is the biggest driver of how a candle burns. Soy wax melts around 120°F, paraffin ranges roughly 130–150°F depending on refining and blend, coconut wax blends run around 124°F, and beeswax is the highest of the common waxes at roughly 145–147°F. Higher melt points hold pillar shapes better in warm rooms; lower melt points generally pool faster. The burn-pool rule and tunneling
On a candle's first light, burn it until the melt pool reaches the full width of the jar — roughly one hour per inch of container diameter. Skip this and the wax "remembers" the edge of that first melt pool, and the wick tunnels straight down through the middle on every future burn no matter how long you burn it afterward. Hot throw vs cold throw
Cold throw is how strongly an unlit candle smells at room temperature, driven by fragrance oil migrating to the wax surface. Hot throw is how strongly it smells while burning, driven by fragrance oil vaporizing out of the heated melt pool. They're different physical processes, so a candle can excel at one and disappoint at the other. More at What Is Scent Throw?.
Wick material: cotton vs wood
Cotton wicks burn steadily and modern braided designs curl and self-trim into the flame's edge. Wood wicks crackle and pop audibly because trapped moisture and resin in the wood grain rapidly release gas as the wick chars — a real combustion effect, not an added sound. Wood wicks need a shorter, straighter trim (about 1/8 inch) than cotton. Full explanation at Why Wood Wicks Crackle.
Fragrance load
Most commercial candles run a fragrance load of roughly 6–10% of total wax weight. Below that range, hot throw tends to be faint; well above it, the wax may not fully bind the oil, risking sweating (oil beading on the surface) or an unstable, sooty flame. This single number drives scent strength more than brand or price.
Wick trimming and soot
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before every single light, not occasionally. An untrimmed wick grows a larger, less efficient flame that produces more soot and a mushroom-shaped carbon cap at the tip. This one habit is the standard fix for both problems. See Why You Have to Trim the Wick.
Does price predict burn time?
Not reliably. Total burn-time hours scale mostly with how much wax is in the container — a bigger jar burns longer almost regardless of price tier. Price differences more often reflect fragrance complexity, wax type (soy/coconut blends and beeswax typically cost more per pound than paraffin), and brand/packaging. Beeswax: facts vs marketing
Beeswax has the highest melt point of the common candle waxes, giving pillars real structural stability, but it carries very little added fragrance compared to paraffin or soy blends — a heavily "beeswax-scented" candle marketed as strongly fragrant deserves a second look. Candle warmers vs burning
Electric warmers melt wax from the top down without a flame or a consumed wick, releasing fragrance without soot or an open flame — a genuinely different mechanism, not just a "safer candle." Scent throw is generally gentler than an actual flame. See Are Candle Warmers Better Than Burning?.
